The Ultimate Secret to a Great Night’s Sleep Every Night
So let me start by saying that I am really glad I got your attention! I’d like to follow that up by saying that I definitely will help you – but probably not in the way you expect…
How many times have you come across an article promising the one-stop secret weapon to make you sleep like a baby? Eat this, drink that, or follow this yoga sequence and bath in this essential oil… And the list goes on!
So, let me cut to the chase and say that I don’t want to give you a shopping-list of things to do. I’m not saying that these things don’t work. But they will work more for some people that others. Some of you will enjoy the rituals, while others will find having a long list of steps to follow just adds more complication to your day. And wellbeing should never feel like a chore.
The ultimate secret is that there is no one-size-fits-all secret. Having a great night’s sleep is about finding what specifically works for you.
If you don’t know my story, I used to be a terrible sleeper and my health suffered greatly. Having burnt myself out with work, socializing and trying to do it all, I reached desperation. So I have absolutely been seduced by all the ‘secret cures’ in the past. I used to go to the gym 5 times a week, almost religiously, to improve my sleep. I’ve been on strict diets, consumed ‘super drinks’, which don’t always taste so super, and tried many other quick fixes from the list of usual suspects.
“Okay, so what does work ?” I hear you ask.
Well, of all the tried and tested tips I have, my top one is to get a diary. Monitoring your sleep is the best way to figure out what really works for you – this separates the quick fixes from the things that hit on your own trouble spots.
So the way to find out if cutting out caffeine after lunchtime, or doing yoga in the evenings, or whatever you try next works for you personally is to monitor your results over time.
The way I work with my clients starts with figuring out what actually causes them to struggle with to getting to sleep, wake up several times a night and feel groggy in the morning. Once we find the cause, we can build a plan to move forward step by step, and really personalize this to suit their life.
Instead of ‘secrets’, we use powerful tools that can work wonders – just as long as the commitment to change is there! At the end of the day, this is not about me; it’s about the individual.
If you are truly motivated to get your sleep and overall wellbeing on track, then you can absolutely do it! I know it is easy to get demotivated, especially when you are mentally suffering from a sleep deficit everyday. Feeling groggy affects motivation, so having some professional support can get you over the initial hump. And as I said, I have absolutely been there and fought my way through it, so I know that you can do it too!
